Ann Up Close
About the Artist and Her Work

Ann lives in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. An elected, award-winning member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, she shows her work in Fredericton, and Sackville, NB.

Ann often chooses to restrict her focus to a specific aspect of a subject, feeling that focusing in tightly produces a feeling of deeper intimacy with the subject, both for herself and for the viewer. This intensity is particularly evident in her portraits and figurative work.

Recent accomplishments include winning the Jarvis Award (Excellence in Transparent Watercolour, 2004), and the Charles Comfort Award (Excellence in Figurative Painting, 2001) at the Annual international annual juried shows of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (CSPWC). She was one of six CSPWC members invited to exhibit in the Fifth International Watercolor Biennial in Mexico City, 2002. This summer, she was juried into the CSPWC 80th anniversary show Endless Possibilities at Roberts Gallery, Yonge Street, Toronto.

Her work has been published by International Artist Publishing in 2004, and is profiled in the October, 2005 issue of Watercolor Magic magazine and in the Spring, 2006 issue of Watercolor magazine.

Artist’s Statement

“To me, the beauty of painting is that I’m invited to examine something or someone – I have the luxury of looking as long as I want, to understand and appreciate. I really want to experience the subject so well that I could be the subject, looking out at the viewer. And at the same time, I want to be outside, interacting with the subject – I want to be the dance partner. In, around, together, immersed, sated…to know and be satisfied. That is why I paint.”
